Did you miss it? At a change that could have a signficant effect, Pages can now join Facebook groups. If you’re a group moderator, you should consider if you want this to be the new normal.
Let’s take a good look and what you could do about it.
On February 7, Facebook wrote an announcement regarding changes coming into messaging and classes for companies . The change is that this one for groups:
…in the coming weeks, Pages is going to be able join community talks in a way that is representative of their company or organization and to participate in Facebook Groups.
Note that Pages have been able to make and link collections for a little while now. As a group creator, the admin has the choice of interacting at the group for a person or as the Page. But until today, other Pages couldn’t join this group.
Facebook provides the application case to provide support
By linking group discussions utilizing my Page identity, I have managed increase [sic] the profile of my business. In reality, since switching from my private profile to my business Page from the groups I media with, I’ve seen members from these groups accompany me or send messages to my Page Inbox. As these interactions may make them consider me it is great.
Sounds good for your brand. But…
Would You Want Pages On Your Staff?
The example above provides evidence for why I don’t want Pages in my groups. For interacting in a group as a page, the debate is entirely self-promotional.
There could be times when this is reasonable. Maybe the objective of your team is centered on promoting and supporting local companies. However, the opportunity for abuse is huge.
Groups are effective for discussion. This ’s what makes them more different and more interesting in the first location. People don’t hide beneath trademarks and brands. There s accountability like that.
I have personal communities constructed around Facebook classes. The objective is to assist one another, and we have strict rules that these communities aren’t areas for self-promotion.
I consider ways that a feature can be abused by actors. I fully expect pages — eager to increase their organic and following reach — to start joining as many groups as they could as a means to advertise their companies.
More spam is coming. Cheaper group content is forthcoming. It s easy to predict.
What You Can Do About It
As it currently stands, an influx of webpages and low-quality content in categories is unavoidable because the entry of webpages in groups is a default option. Groups do have the capacity to turn this off.
First, go to your Team Settings.
You should see a part for “Membership Requests. ”
From the example above, the default option is set to “Allow Pages to ask to join as members. Need that! Alternatively, you may simply pick the option to disallow requests that are new and save setting. Should you’ve already let any Pages in (if you use automatic acceptance, as an instance ), you might want to go in one-by-one and handle that.
As I type this, I’ve the “Membership Requests from Pages” part in the Group Settings of 2 of my three Power Hitters Club private Facebook groups. If you overlook ’t yet have it, I assume that Pages can’t nevertheless join your group.
Why is Facebook Doing This?
I have a hard time. In the face of corruption, spam, inauthentic behavior, and fake accounts, Facebook should be centered on quality. The user experience must come first, even at the expense of company.
That’s not what is apparently happening here. The idea process of allowing Pages into classes is centered on improving results for businesses. This will be at the expense of inauthentic, impartial, and spammy behaviour. We, as staff and users admins, did not need more of that.
Business owners can view this as a triumph, however it’s short-sighted win. While it will be a loophole to get your company seen at a greater speed, many will misuse this. The quality of groups’ usefulness and articles within groups generally will fall.
Unless, of course, Facebook does something about it. One step is simple: Turn off this by default.
What do you believe about this upgrade? Will you let Pages?
